How to Properly Uninstall Programs on Windows

Got a computer full of programs you never use? You're not alone. Most Windows computers accumulate dozens of unused applications over time, and they're quietly eating up disk space, slowing down your system, and cluttering your Start menu. Here in Saskatoon, it's one of the most common issues our software support team sees.

The problem is that many people either don't know how to uninstall programs properly, or they just delete the desktop shortcut and think that's enough. Spoiler: it's not. In this guide, I'll walk you through the right way to remove programs on Windows 10 and Windows 11 so your computer stays clean and fast.

The average Windows PC has over 60 installed programs, but most users regularly use fewer than 20. Those unused programs waste gigabytes of storage and can slow down your startup.

Why Proper Uninstalling Matters

Simply deleting a program's shortcut or folder doesn't actually remove it. When software is installed on Windows, it spreads files across multiple locations - the Program Files folder, your user AppData directory, the Windows Registry, and sometimes the system folders too.

If you don't uninstall properly, all those files stay behind. Over time, this leads to:

  • Wasted disk space: Leftover files from dozens of programs can add up to several gigabytes
  • Slower startup: Many programs add background services and startup entries that persist even when you stop using them
  • Registry bloat: Orphaned registry entries can cause errors and slow down your system
  • Software conflicts: Leftover files from old programs can interfere with new installations

The right approach takes just a couple of minutes and keeps your PC running smoothly.

Method #1: Uninstall Through Windows Settings

This is the easiest and most modern method, available on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. It's the approach we recommend for most Saskatoon users.

Steps for Windows 11:

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
  2. Click Apps in the left sidebar
  3. Click Installed apps
  4. Find the program you want to remove - you can use the search bar or sort by size to find the biggest space hogs
  5. Click the three dots next to the program
  6. Click Uninstall, then confirm

Steps for Windows 10:

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings
  2. Click Apps
  3. Click Apps & features
  4. Find and click the program you want to remove
  5. Click Uninstall, then confirm

Pro tip: Sort the list by Size to quickly identify which programs are taking up the most space. You might be surprised by what's eating your storage.

Method #2: Use the Control Panel

The classic Control Panel method still works and sometimes shows programs that don't appear in the newer Settings app. If a program isn't showing up in Settings, try this approach.

Steps:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter
  3. Find the program in the list
  4. Right-click it and select Uninstall
  5. Follow the uninstaller prompts

The Control Panel view also shows you the installation date and size of each program, which is helpful for finding old software you forgot about.

Method #3: Use the Program's Own Uninstaller

Some programs come with their own dedicated uninstaller that does a more thorough cleanup than the Windows default. This is especially common with antivirus software, creative suites like Adobe products, and gaming platforms.

How to Find It:

  • Check the program's folder in Start Menu → All Apps for an "Uninstall" option
  • Look in the program's installation folder (usually in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86)) for a file named uninstall.exe or uninst.exe

Using the program's own uninstaller is particularly important for antivirus software. These programs hook deeply into Windows, and using the standard uninstall method sometimes leaves behind drivers and services that can cause problems. Most antivirus companies also offer a dedicated removal tool on their website.

How to Remove Leftover Files After Uninstalling

Even after a proper uninstall, some files may linger. Here's how to clean them up manually if you want a truly thorough removal.

Check These Locations:

  • C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files (x86) - Look for folders with the program's name and delete them
  • C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local - Settings and cache files often stay here (press Windows + R, type %localappdata%)
  • C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming - More settings files (type %appdata% in Run)

Clean Up with Disk Cleanup:

  1. Search for Disk Cleanup in the Start menu
  2. Select your main drive (usually C:)
  3. Check Temporary files, Thumbnails, and other categories
  4. Click Clean up system files for even more options
  5. Click OK to remove the selected files

Important: Only delete folders you're confident belong to the uninstalled program. If you're unsure, leave it alone or ask for help. Deleting the wrong files can cause other software to stop working.

Programs You Should Probably Uninstall

Not sure what to remove? Here are common types of programs that Saskatoon residents can safely uninstall to free up space and improve performance:

  • Bloatware: Pre-installed manufacturer software you've never opened (trial antivirus, games, media apps from Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.)
  • Duplicate programs: Multiple PDF readers, media players, or image viewers when you only use one
  • Old software versions: Previous versions of programs that installed a newer version separately instead of updating
  • Browser toolbars: If you still have Ask Toolbar or similar add-ons from years ago, they should go
  • Programs you downloaded once: That video converter or file recovery tool you used two years ago is just taking up space now

What You Should Never Uninstall

While cleaning up is good, some programs look unfamiliar but are actually essential for your computer to function. Be careful not to remove these:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable: You may see several versions installed - many programs need these to run
  • .NET Framework: A core Windows component that many applications depend on
  • Device drivers: Programs from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or Realtek manage your hardware and should stay
  • Windows system components: Anything published by Microsoft that you don't recognize is likely important

When in doubt, search the program name online before removing it. A quick search will tell you whether it's safe to uninstall or if other software depends on it.
