You turn on your computer and get nothing but a black screen. Or maybe it was working fine, then suddenly went black in the middle of what you were doing. Either way, a black screen is one of the most frustrating tech problems you can face - especially when you can hear your computer running in the background.
Here's the good news: most black screen issues aren't as serious as they seem. In our years providing computer repair services to Saskatoon residents, we've found that about 80% of black screen problems have simple solutions you can try yourself. This guide covers the troubleshooting steps our tech support team uses to diagnose and fix black screens quickly.
Black screen issues are among the top 5 most common computer problems reported to tech support, but fortunately, most can be resolved in under 15 minutes with the right approach.
Why You're Seeing a Black Screen
A black screen can happen for several reasons, and understanding what's causing it helps you fix it faster. The key difference to identify first is whether your computer is actually running or completely dead.
If you hear fans spinning, see LED lights on the case, or hear hard drive activity, your computer is on - it's just not displaying anything. This is actually good news because it narrows down the problem to display-related issues. If there's no sound or lights at all, you might have a power issue instead - check our guide on computers that won't turn on.
Common Causes of Black Screens:
- Display sleep mode: Monitor went to sleep and didn't wake up properly
- Loose cable connections: HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable came loose or failed
- Graphics driver issues: Corrupted or outdated display drivers causing problems
- Windows update problems: Recent updates interfering with display settings
- Multiple display confusion: Computer sending output to wrong display
- Overheating graphics card: GPU shutting down to prevent damage
- Hardware failure: Monitor, graphics card, or motherboard issues (less common)
Quick Fix #1: Wake Up Your Display
Before diving into complex solutions, start with the simplest fix. Your computer might be on, but the display is stuck in sleep mode. This happens more often than you'd think, especially after Saskatchewan power fluctuations during storms.
Steps:
- Move your mouse: Move it vigorously in all directions for a few seconds
- Press any key on keyboard: Try the spacebar, Shift, or Caps Lock
- Check monitor power: Make sure the monitor's power light is on (usually blue or green when active)
- Press monitor power button: Turn the monitor off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on
- Try the Windows key: Press Windows + P twice, wait 5 seconds, then press Enter - this cycles through display modes
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete: This can wake up a frozen display
If you see the login screen or desktop appear after any of these steps, your issue was just a sleep mode glitch. Easy fix! If not, continue to the next solutions.
Quick Fix #2: Check Display Connections
Loose or faulty cables are surprisingly common in our Saskatoon repair shop. Even if you haven't moved anything, cables can work loose from vibration, temperature changes, or just age.
For Desktop Computers:
- Check both ends of the video cable: Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA cable at both the monitor and computer
- Inspect the cable: Look for visible damage, bent pins, or fraying
- Try a different cable: If you have a spare HDMI or DisplayPort cable, swap it out
- Check the correct port: If you have a dedicated graphics card, make sure the monitor is plugged into the graphics card ports (middle of the back), NOT the motherboard ports (top of the back)
- Tighten screws: If using VGA or DVI, make sure the connector screws are tight
For Laptops:
- Check external displays: If connected to an external monitor, unplug it and use only the laptop screen
- Look for dimmed backlight: Shine a flashlight at the screen at an angle - can you see a very faint image? This means the backlight failed
- Adjust brightness: Press the brightness up keys (usually Fn + brightness key) several times
If you're still seeing black, the cable and connections are likely fine. Move on to more advanced troubleshooting steps, or contact our tech support service for professional diagnosis.
Quick Fix #3: Force Restart Your Computer
If your computer is running but showing a black screen that won't respond to keyboard or mouse input, a force restart often clears the problem. This is especially effective after Windows updates or driver installations gone wrong.
Steps:
- Press and hold the power button: Hold it down for 10-15 seconds until the computer completely shuts off
- Wait 30 seconds: Give the system time to fully power down
- Unplug power briefly (desktops): For desktop PCs, unplug the power cable for 30 seconds to clear residual power
- Restart normally: Press the power button once and let the computer start up
- Be patient: The first boot after a force restart may take 2-3 minutes longer than usual
During restart, watch for any text, logos, or flashing on the screen. Even a brief flash indicates your display and graphics are working - the problem is software-related, which is easier to fix.
Quick Fix #4: Boot to Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads Windows with only essential drivers and services, bypassing problematic graphics drivers or software that might be causing the black screen. This is one of the most powerful troubleshooting tools for display issues.
Method 1: Using Power Button (if screen is completely black):
- Force shutdown: Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the PC turns off
- Turn on and force shutdown again: Power on, wait for the Windows logo (even if you can't see it - count 10 seconds), then hold power button again
- Repeat one more time: This third interrupted boot triggers Windows Recovery
- Wait for Recovery: After the third boot, Windows should automatically enter recovery mode (you might see blue screens with text)
- Navigate blindly if needed: Press Enter, wait 5 seconds, press the Down arrow key 3 times, press Enter - this often boots to Safe Mode
Method 2: If you can see the login screen but it goes black after:
- At login screen: Click the power icon (bottom right corner)
- Hold Shift key: While holding Shift, click Restart
- Choose Troubleshoot: Select Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart
- Press 4 or F4: When the Startup Settings menu appears, press 4 or F4 to boot to Safe Mode
What to Do in Safe Mode:
Once in Safe Mode (you'll see "Safe Mode" in the corners of the screen), you can:
- Uninstall recent Windows updates that might have caused problems
- Update or roll back graphics drivers (see Fix #5)
- Run System Restore to go back to when the computer worked
- Check for malware or problematic software
If your display works fine in Safe Mode, you've confirmed the problem is software-related, not hardware. That's great news - it's fixable without replacing parts.
Quick Fix #5: Update Graphics Drivers
Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers are a leading cause of black screens, especially after Windows updates. Here in Saskatoon, we see this frequently after Windows forces automatic updates overnight.
Steps (perform in Safe Mode if needed):
- Open Device Manager: Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager
- Expand Display Adapters: Click the arrow next to "Display adapters"
- Right-click your graphics card: It will say NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel
- Select "Update driver": Choose "Search automatically for updated driver software"
- Let Windows search: Wait while it downloads and installs any available updates
- Restart your computer: After installation completes
Alternative Method - Reinstall Driver:
- In Device Manager: Right-click your graphics card
- Select "Uninstall device": Check the box "Delete the driver software" if shown
- Restart your computer: Windows will automatically reinstall a fresh driver
For the most current drivers, visit the manufacturer's website directly (NVIDIA.com, AMD.com, or Intel.com) and download the latest driver for your specific graphics card model. If you need help identifying your hardware or updating drivers, our Saskatoon tech support team can handle this remotely for just $29.
Quick Fix #6: Disconnect External Displays
If you use multiple monitors or recently connected an external display, Windows might be sending the image to the wrong screen. This is incredibly common and easy to fix.
For Desktop Users:
- Disconnect all extra monitors: Unplug every display except your primary monitor
- Restart the computer: With only one monitor connected
- Once working, reconnect displays: Add one monitor at a time
- Use Windows + P: Press Windows key + P to cycle through display modes: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only
For Laptop Users:
- Disconnect all external monitors: Unplug any HDMI or DisplayPort cables
- Close and reopen the laptop: This can reset the display detection
- Press Windows + P: Cycle through display modes to force output to laptop screen
Some laptops have a physical switch or Fn key combination to toggle between displays. Check your laptop's manual or the function keys (often F4, F5, or F8 with a monitor icon).
Quick Fix #7: Reset Display Settings
If you recently changed display settings like resolution or refresh rate, Windows might have applied settings your monitor can't handle, resulting in a black screen. Windows should automatically revert after 15 seconds, but sometimes it doesn't.
Blind Method (when you can't see anything):
- Press Windows key + P: Wait 2 seconds
- Press Down arrow: Wait 2 seconds
- Press Enter: This should switch display modes
- If still black: Press Windows + P again, press Down twice, press Enter
- Repeat: Cycle through all four display mode options
Boot to Low-Resolution Mode:
- Enter Safe Mode: Use the method from Fix #4
- Go to Display Settings: Right-click desktop → Display settings
- Change resolution: Select a lower resolution like 1024x768
- Restart normally: Exit Safe Mode and boot normally
- Adjust settings: Once you can see, gradually increase resolution to find what works
How to Prevent Black Screen Issues
Once you've fixed your black screen, follow these tips to prevent it from happening again:
- Keep graphics drivers updated: Check for driver updates monthly, especially before major Windows updates
- Secure cable connections: Make sure video cables are firmly connected and not being pulled or stressed by cable management
- Delay Windows updates: Set active hours in Windows Update settings to prevent updates during work time
- Use quality cables: Cheap HDMI cables can fail - invest in certified cables for reliable connections
- Monitor temperature: Keep your computer clean and well-ventilated to prevent graphics card overheating - especially important during Saskatoon summers
- Create a restore point: Before installing new software or drivers, create a System Restore point you can return to
- Don't change settings blindly: When adjusting display settings, Windows asks "Keep these settings?" - always wait to see if it's stable before confirming
- Regular maintenance: Schedule professional cleaning and checkups annually to catch potential hardware issues early
When to Get Professional Help
While these fixes solve most black screen issues, some situations need expert diagnosis:
- None of these fixes work: You've tried everything and still have a black screen
- Intermittent black screens: Screen goes black randomly and unpredictably
- Physical damage: Computer was dropped, hit, or exposed to liquids
- Artifacts or distortion: Before going black, you saw strange colors, lines, or glitches
- Burning smell: Any unusual odors coming from your computer
- Multiple component failures: Other issues happening simultaneously (freezing, crashes, strange noises)
- Business-critical system: You need it working ASAP and can't afford more troubleshooting
